The American Bombay cat is often confused with the British Bombay cat in that they are both known for their sleek black coats. The American Bombay was created in 1958 when an American Shorthair and a Burmese were bred together in the hopes to create a domestic cat that closely resembled a wild panther. This breeding was a success and the result was a new breed of cat that very much resembled the wild panther of India.
American Bombay cats tend to have orange eyes. This is the easiest way to tell apart a British Bombay and an American Bombay.
